Installation Management Command employees enjoy a free ride to work 110916

By Karla A. Seijas
IMCOM Public Affairs

More than a dozen Installation Management Command employees ride to and from work for free in a VIA Van Pool, through the US Army Mass Transit Benefit Program.

"All I can say is this is the best thing since sliced bread – nope it’s better than sliced bread! Love it!" said passenger Debbie Martin, an IMCOM Family and MWR programs employee. "It’s less wear and tear on us, less wear and tear on our wallets, and less wear and tear on the environment."

Kelly Sandifer, who works in IMCOM resource management, saw a VIA vanpool van on Fort Sam Houston and became intrigued. He decided to start a van pool service for IMCOM employees. Through his search for vanpool-interested employees, he met Tammy Copus, who works in IMCOM Family and MWR Programs. Copus assisted Sandifer in getting the program started, and now serves as the alternate point of contact.

Sandifer had good reason to start a vanpool; previously he drove over 62 miles a day (each-way) in his own vehicle between home and work.

"I was able to sell my extra car, and when you add up fuel, oil changes, tires, and insurance, it’s a huge savings; over 0 per month for me," said Sandifer.

It’s not just about money; the approval of van pools is another positive step the command is taking to reduce our impact on the environment. The program has already taken nearly three dozen cars off the road, reducing traffic, congestion, parking issues, and most importantly, pollution and harmful emissions.

Each vanpool group can have 4 to 15 employees. Members of the vanpool can volunteer to serve as a driver if they wish. Once a group is officially enrolled, the van pool coordinator receives a fleet gas card, which is funded through the MTBP, and a 7-, 12- or 15-passenger van, which is provided by Enterprise Rent-a-Car and paid for by the MTBP.

Participants have to commit to riding in the vanpool at least 50% of each month.

"As our Leaders have said, we are in a new Fiscal Reality. The impact is far reaching and has not only affected the DoD but our personal lives as well," said van pool passenger Jeffrey Fitton, an IMCOM training directorate employee, when describing the benefits of the program.

"By taking part in the VIA Van Pool program, I can prevent unnecessary wear and tear on my car and I can save 0 a month by not having to pay for fuel," said Fitton. "Why would anyone not want to save money?"

Sandifer said that there are two main reasons.

"Some folks just don’t want to ‘loss their liberty’ in being able to come and go as they please. Others feel they won’t get the support of their leadership when they have to leave work at a specified time every day", Sandifer said. Other than that this thing is really taking off."

Service to the vehicle and insurance is also provided by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. For most situations, there is no cost to the employee for participating in the program.

Some participants use the commute to catch up on e-mails, sleep or simply chat with fellow riders.

"One of our riders sits in the back of the van most days and works on her laptop," said Copus. "The other riders try to be as quiet as possible when necessary, but all other times there is normally a lot of socializing and laughter."

Copus also described an afternoon commute when two employees needed to participate in a conference call. The fellow passengers respected their need for a quiet atmosphere until the call was over. They even adjusted their usual ride time by five minutes to ensure the two individuals would be on time for their call.

"It’s like getting an extra step increase," said David Abbott, a telecommunications specialist at IMCOM, when asked to describe the van pool.

There are currently three active van pools to the new IMCOM campus on Ft. Sam Houston and there is great potential for more. The current areas being serviced are Boerne, New Braunfels and the Stone Oak. More vanpools will start at the end of September in the areas of Schertz, New Braunfels and Highway 281 North (Evans Road & Bulverde).

If an unforeseen scheduling conflict occurs and a van pool rider has to leave their place of business, the Certified Auto Ride in an Emergency program is offered for a fee of five dollars per year. According to the Care Program, "for an annual fee, you can receive four free cab rides to use during the year…whenever an emergency arises."

If a vanpool rider enrolled in the Care program needs to get home early for unforeseen circumstances or can’t wait for the normal commute time because of an illness, a sick child or family member, the normal ride left early or unexpected overtime, they’re eligible for a free taxi ride, and the waiting time is less than 20 minutes.

IMCOM employees can sign up to participate in the VIA van pool by accessing the signup sheet in the shared drive or by contacting Kelly Sandifer or Tammy Copus.

Other Fort Sam employees can contact the Army Mass Transportation Benefit Program at ASAFM-MTBP@conus.army.mil to learn how to start a van pool in their organization.

————

If an employee chooses to ride public transportation to work by means of the San Antonio VIA bus system they are also eligible to receive benefits through the MTBP, which covers the cost of a monthly bus pass.

The MTBP originated 21 April 2000, via Executive Order 13150, "Federal Workforce Transportation." The executive order requires Federal agencies to provide employee incentives to use public transportation in their commute to and from work.

All Army employees (military and civilian) are eligible to use the MTBP mass transportation fare subsidy when using public transportation or van or car pools for their work commute. The MTBP goal is to reduce the air pollution and traffic congestion while expanding commuting alternatives.

Auto Resources question by Ry R: I’m pricing auto insurance, and need a free online police accident record search resource.?
As I said I’m trying to price out auto insurance, however when asked if I’ve had an accident in the last 5 years I can’t quite recall the exact date of my last accident, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s been more than 5 years (just barely). I was curious if there are any free online resources that I could use to search for the actual police record of the accident, without having to pay any sort of fee, just so I can double check the date and confirm that I’m providing accurate information. Does anyone know of any online database of the sort, or whether that information is publicly available period? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Auto Resources best answer:

Answer by MikeTL
Nope, none that are free. If you have the case number you can go to the police dept and request a copy. They charge because they have to pay someone to pull the record and make you a copy.

Just put down no accidents within the last 5 years. They already have the info and if your off by like a month or two their not going to care.

“Y” and “W” Vehicles Location Guide for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Yankee

The Yankee is a great big delivery truck in San Andreas.
Speed and handling: Slow. Handles awkwardly. And flips over with ease, thus eventually exploding. You really don’t want to be driving one of these if the cops are after you
Locations:The Yankee is pretty common around industrial areas and docks, especially near the Easter Basin Docks in San Fierro, the LVA Freight Depot in Las Venturas and the southeastern portions of Los Santos.

Yosemite

This is basically a GMC Sierra from the 1990s, a full-size pick-up truck with double back tires.
Speed and handling: Acceleration is a bit lacking, but eventually you can get going pretty well in a Yosemite. The handling is fair, but the truck is big enough that it’s difficult to make tight turns. Seems able to take a fair amount of damage. Despite this being a sizable truck, it doesn’t really seem any better off-road than on-road to me.
Locations:The Yosemite can pop up just about anywhere, in cities or countryside, but I tend to see it more commonly in Las Venturas and rarely in Los Santos.

Walton

The Walton is the San Andreas version of an old 1950s Chevrolet pickup truck.
Speed and handling: This is a slow truck. It starts slow and it stays slow. It’s steering is fair, but that’s mostly because you will not be going very fast, any way. It can take some damage, at least a little more than the average car in this game.
Locations:You can find the Walton most commonly in the countryside, and quite often on the roads in the desert regions. If you are out in the nowhere lands of Back O’ Beyond, there is usually a Walton parked by a wooden bridge. There often is also a Walton parked behind the Angel Pine Sawmill, and you can usually find one parked around any farms.

Washington

This car looks something like a Lincoln.
Speed and handling: The Washington is not a fast car, but it makes up somewhat for that in the fact it is heavy enough and strong enough and durable enough to knock other cars out of its way. The steering here is mediocre, probably mainly due to the length of this vehicle making it somewhat difficult to make sharp corners.
Locations:There is almost always a Washington parked in Tierra Robada at Mike Toreno’s ranch. Otherwise, you can sometimes find a Washington cruising along in any of the cities. It seems a bit more common in San Fierro than in Los Santos or Las Venturas.

Wayfarer

This motorcycle is basically a Honda Goldwing.
Speed and handling: It is hard to do stunts with a Wayfarer because it is a slow motorcycle, but this is still a good bike, especially for those with a low motorcycle skill. Why? Because it handles better than any other motorcycle in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Locations: The Wayfarer is pretty common on the roads and highways in the desert and countryside, and sometimes is parked at restaurants and truck stops outside the cities.

Windsor

The Windsor looks something like a Jaguar from the 1960s.
Speed and handling: This is a fast vehicle, and has great acceleration. But it tends to fishtail around those tight curves. Also, being an older car, even if it is a sports car, it’s a bit heavy. Which means it can take a fair amount of damage before catching fire.
Locations:I’ve seen the Windsor most commonly throughout Las Venturas, but I’ve also seen it a few times in Los Santos and San Fierro, but not necessarily in any particular places.

Off Road Vehicle

Of course you may think you are free to cycle, anywhere you want. The problem is, there are other vehicles on the road and the road network. In fact, in the event of an accident on the road with cyclists, often with other vehicles. Good advice is to avoid streets with obvious dangers.

You should avoid roads with blind corners and shoulder width is always short. Instead, you can roads, which voters rarely used by humans. Old roads can be a good example. Beach or on rural roads can still outstanding. But consider the quality of the road, too. You do not want to drive in difficult conditions all the time, no?

As a cyclist you have to watch those trucks or large vehicles on the road. Difficult for them to see you. They keep well bear a great responsibility, like a ton of wood. Solution as a cyclist is to ride aggressively. But note that this can not be true at any time. In some cases, the more command on the road to take. In other cases, it is better to remain “invisible” and go with the flow. This applies especially when driving with all roads, traffic lights. A good example is an urban area. Unlike vehicles with four wheels on the road, you will be aware of things before the other wheels.

motorcycles can be a nuisance for you. It could be because they block the way or your way before you need. You also have the carbon monoxide emitted from their exhaust deal! There are two things you can do. You can speed your way and block it. Another option is to give riders the ride ahead. This is done by slowing the bike on your part.

number one cause of bicycle accidents is that many people can not see the bike on the road. This is because in some countries, bicycles can rarely be seen in the streets. That is why the other vehicle operators argue that they did not see rider, when an accident happens! Your brain just does not register that you exist, even though they’ve seen you before!

Sun, as a cyclist, you should be able, by making sure to take considerable. You have to wear jerseys that can illuminate the dark purchasing bicycle lights or other lights. There are not a good idea to go with a black shirt and shorts at night without lights.

You should also check with the laws of the road. If you like them, like a bicycle rider of the motorcycle laws of the road. When a final tip, you should not go against the traffic regulations. Try to come in one file if possible. Cyclists must cycle known together that can be fun while at first glance, is actually doing very dangerous. You will have more room to reduce the width of the street, when to do it.

Uranus, I’m not sure if the San Andreas car Uranus is actually based on a real vehicle, but it looks a bit like a Mitsubishi from the early 1990

Voodoo I’m not much for Lowrider in San Andreas, but if I have a hard disk that’s probably the voodoo

The “T” Vehicles Location Guide for Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Tahoma

This four-door sedan appears something like a Chevrolet Monte Carlo from the 1980s.
Speed and handling: The Tahoma might not look like much, but it’s an all-around solid vehicle. Decent speed, acceleration, handling. Even seems able to take its share of damage.
Locations:The Tahoma appears in both country and city, so you can just about find it anywhere. It’s most common in Ballas territories in Los Santos.

Tampa

The Tampa appears to be the Grand Theft Auto version of a late 1960s Chevrolet Corsair, and to make it look even older each Tampa comes in a mix of colors, making it look as if it’s been put together in someone’s garage.
Speed and handling: A lot of players don’t seem to like the Tampa, but I think it’s an alright vehicle. Sure, it handles badly and the speed could be much improved, but its durability seems fair and its top-end speed isn’t awful.
Locations:Sometimes you can find a Tampa parked at the gas station down near the docks in San Fierro. Also, in Jefferson in Los Santos there is a used car lot that often has a Tampa. On the roads, I usually spot Tampas cruising around in eastern San Fierro.

Tanker

The Tanker is a great big rig!
Speed and handling: This vehicle is pretty slow, but it’s acceleration is fair, at least for such a large truck. It’s handling is adequate, but again, mainly for such a large truck. You don’t want to make sharp turns with the Tanker because you’ll just end up going off road and perhaps bumping into things. At least the Tanker is big, strong and sturdy, thus there is not much it can’t simply knock out of the way.
Locations:The Tanker is the most common of the big trucks in San Andreas and is found on the roads of the countryside and the deserts. Try looking around Mt. Chiliad, Tierra Robada, Bone County, and other locales outside the cities.

Taxi

Yep, it’s the Taxi. And it’s not a bad vehicle. You can use it to complete, of course, the Taxi mission. And once you pass that mission in San Andreas, any Taxi or Cabbie you climb into will have nitro for that extra speedy boost.
Speed and handling: Overall, I would say the Taxi’s stats are slightly above average, but not great. It has fair speed and acceleration. It seems slightly more durable than many cars, thus able to take some gunfire and survive a few crashes. And it has pretty good handling and doesn’t fishtail out of control much, unless maybe when hit by a really big vehicle like a tank or rig. However, I wouldn’t suggest taking it off road or onto wet grass.
Locations: This has got to be the most common vehicle in all of San Andreas (though sometimes it feels like the police vehicles are), so you shouldn’t have any problems finding one. The Taxi is more common in the cities, but sometimes you can even find one on the highways of the desert and country areas.

Tornado

This car looks like a Chevy Bel Air from the 1950s.
Speed and handling: Despite its old appearance, the Tornado is actually a pretty good car. It has decent acceleration and top-end speed. It seems quite solid, able to take a goodly amount of gunfire. And it even steers pretty well, following your controls with ease and not spinning all over the place whenever it bumps into something.
Locations:Unfortunately, for all its good qualities, the Tornado is not an easy vehicle to find in San Andreas. Usually it can be found in Vagos territory, mainly eastern and northeastern Los Santos, but even there it can sometimes be quite rare, especially late in the game when normally your CJ character will have just about wiped out the Vagos.

Tow Truck

What an original name. Tow Truck. And that’s just what it is. It looks something like a Ford F-150 pickup truck with a tow bar on the back. You can have some fun with it, however, because you can lower and raise the arm on the back of this truck and actually use it to tow other vehicles.
Speed and handling: The Tow Truck is actually quite durable. It’s capable of taking a lot of gunfire before exploding. It also also good speed, though the acceleration is not the best. It’s steering is a bit sluggish, meaning it seems slow to take you commands. Also, while the Tow Truck doesn’t flip over easily, it doesn’t have much speed or nearly as much control when you take if off road, so stick to concrete and blacktop.
Locations:The Tow Trucks seems quite rare, but I’ve found it near the docks in San Fierro, on the desert highways and around the docks in southeastern Los Santos. There is usually one parked at the Angel Pine junkyard.

Tractor

It’s exactly what its title says. A tractor. Like the Tow Truck, you can raise and lower the little arm on the back of the Tractor to tow cars and trucks.
Speed and handling: Slow, slow, slow. Perhaps the slowest vehicle in San Andreas. But it digs in well and can take steep hills with ease, just slowly. It over steers way too much, but what can you expect from a tractor?
Locations: Tractors are pretty common in the countryside, even sometimes on the highways. You can find one parked at The Farm and at a trailer park just south of the Flint Intersection. Also, look around the safe house in Flint County, because the Tractor can be found parked quite often in that area.

Trashmaster

It’s a garbage truck. That’s about it. It doesn’t do anything special.
Speed and handling: The Trashmaster is slow and sluggish, but it can take a fair amount of damage and is big enough to knock smaller vehicles out of its way. It handles about like you expect, slow and sluggish, just like its speed.
Locations:The Trashmaster is a very rare vehicle, but when it spawns on the roads it is always within a city. The few times I have seen one has been near docks, such as in eastern San Fierro or southeastern Los Santos.

Tropic

The Tropic is a big boat, perhaps the biggest in San Andreas.
Speed and handling: This sucker is big, but it’s also slow, slow, slow. Don’t expect to win any boat races with a Tropic. It handles decent enough, but you’ll be taking those turns without much speed. Don’t expect quick changes of direction.
Locations: The Tropic is usually found floating on the waters of San Andreas, but most often near or out in the oceans.

Tug

It’s a little vehicle for use mostly at airports. Ho hum.
Speed and handling: The Tug takes a long time to get going, but it actually has decent speed once you’ve had metal on the pedal for a while. It steers okay, but nothing special. It doesn’t get up enough speed to spin out of control, though it is just a tad bit top heavy and wants to flip over on its side when encountering rough terrain.
Locations: The Tug is found within airports in San Andreas, and sometimes outside airports but near. The only exception to this is you can find it in the secret underground base in Area 69 in the desert, but good luck surviving since the military will be gunning for you the second you draw near the base.

Turismo

The Turismo is one of the best vehicles in all of San Andreas. It’s based on a Ferrari.
Speed and handling: Everything is great about this car. It has fantastic speed and acceleration and it handles like a dream. Really, you won’t spin out of control often with a Turismo unless maybe you’re flying along at top speeds. However, it is built for the road, not dirt or sand, so stick to the highways and streets.
Locations:The Turismo is very hard to find. It is not parked anywhere, so you can’t just pick one up. The only place I’ve seen the Turismo is along The Strip in Las Venturas, so look to jack one there.
