Off-Road racing is my thing. Lots of speed, lots of flying dirt. Worth the 3 hr. drive. I found something to do on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend from now on.

Should You Complete A Road Race Or Time Trial To Prepare For Your Next Triathlon?

Article by Pawan Preet

When it comes to preparing for a triathlon many wonder if they should first partake in various running, cycling, and/or swimming competitions prior to their first triathlon race. The answer is dependent on various factors both physically and psychologically speaking.

First off, if you are competing at the sprint or Olympic distances and are interested in simply finishing the race then it is not really important to complete a 5k road race or 20k time trial on the bike. However, if you are on your second or third season and your athletic limiter is your running leg in previous triathlons you may want to focus on improving your overal 5k run or 20k bike split by jumping in a stand alone 5k road race or 20k time trial in your area. It is always better to enter these events towards the middle to later part of your training once you have already built up a solid base of training for several months.

Psychologically speaking, some may want to complete a stand alone 5k road race or 40k time trial on the bike in order to build up confidence and just to get a feeling for how this distance feels in a race type situation. If you are feeling a great deal of anxiety over your first triathlon or feel that you need to be in a race type situation to get a better feel for your bike, it may benefit you to jump into a either a 5k run event or 40k event for the bike.

It is not common, but there are also open water swim events out there. I believe these are also great for beginners and advanced triathletes who are fearful of the swim leg of an open water swim triathlon. It is very common to have this fear and it may be beneficial to actually participate in an open water swim event to get a better feeling of how to sight, turn around buoys, and draft of off swimmers around you. These events are not as common as 5k running events or 40k time trials but if you have the opportunity to participate in one I highly recommend you do so prior to your first open water swim triathlon.

Competing in these single events may also help in reducing your pre-race anxiety levels prior to your big triathlon event. Look at these preparatory events as workouts but also use them to practice your pre-race fueling and race fueling, muscle relaxation techniques to reduce pre-race anxiety, and race tactics/strategy such as pacing.

I would be coming from a mudding background wanting to move to desert racing in trucks. Advice?

Where should I start, where can I find literature? I found a bunch of sites but I’m not sure how reliable their info is.
